Chapter Thirty-Four

The Sheriff approached the group of kids sitting on the ground and just stared. He finally turned and headed over to where Buck and the others were standing.

“What the hell Buck?” he asked.

Buck shrugged his shoulders. “You got us. We were just wondering the same thing.”

The Sheriff looked back at the kids and then back at Buck. Buck went on to explain about the explosions and the shootout. He excused himself from Manning and Jenkins and he and the Sheriff walked over to look at the dead kid by the mine entry. The Sheriff pulled the cover back just enough so the other kids couldn’t see and then replaced the blanket. They next walked over to the aspen tree and Buck showed the Sheriff the body of the older boy. The Sheriff didn’t say a word.

Their last stop was the body of the old man. The explosion had done a little damage to the body but it was the bullet holes in his chest that were what had killed him. The Sheriff stood for a long minute and then looked at Buck.

“I checked on PIS as we came in. He doesn’t seem to be the least bit concerned that he has a chunk of wood embedded in his shoulder. I’ve got transport coming so we can get him out of here.” He stood for a second as if deep in thought. “Honest opinion Buck. What do you think we have here? Is this some kind of cult or some weird sex thing or what?”

“I have no idea Sheriff. This is a new one on me. I’ve seen a lot of abused kids in my day but these kids don’t look abused to my eyes. The way they held hands coming out of the mine, I almost get the feeling they are some kind of family.”

The Sheriff looked at Buck. “Seriously? And who’s this old guy, the father of these kids?”

“Possibly,” said Buck. “But I don’t think so. These kids all appear to be about the same age. The kid under the tree looks to be the oldest we have seen so far and the one by the mine entrance looks to be a little bit older than the rest. I doubt they are siblings in the typical sense.”

“Fuck Buck. This is going to be a mess. I better let social services know. This is going to make their day.” The Sheriff walked off pulling his radio off his belt as he went.

Buck took the opportunity and walked over to check on PIS. The Gunnison deputy who had been working on him explained that all things considered, PIS seemed to be doing remarkably well. Buck sat on the ground next to PIS and looked at him.

“I hate to be a bother Agent Taylor. Much ado about nothing,” said PIS.

Buck looked at PIS. “You have a five-inch-long chunk of wood stuck in your shoulder. I don’t think that’s much ado about nothing.”

PIS didn’t say anything further, so Buck continued. “You pretty much saved my life back there.
